Ovulation Rate as the Selection Criterion for Litter Size in Sheep
نویسنده
چکیده
Egg transfer experiments have consistently failed to find differences among sheep breeds in their ability to support a given number of fertilised eggs. The literature on egg survival rate in pregnant, multiple ovulating ewes is also remarkably consistent across a wide range of breeds and environments in terms of the ratio of foetuses (or lambs) to corpora lutea. Two reports on egg survival in ewes of the same breed but genetically different ovulation rates have also failed to demonstrate differences in egg survival. It is concluded that there is no gentic variation among ewes in their ability to support a given number of fertilised eggs (within the range l-6). It follows, therefore, that the genetic correlation between litter size and ovulation rate is unity. Consequently, selection for increased litter size is really using litter size as an index of ovulation rate. It is shown that the efficiency of this index is a function of average ovulation rate and declines as ovulation rate increases.

Screening for FecGH Mutation of Growth Differentiation Factor 9 Gene in Iranian Ghezel Sheep Population
Background Ghezel sheep are highly prolific and one of the local sheep breeds in Iran and Turkey. Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF9) gene has been found to be essential for growth and differentiation of early ovarian follicles. Novel mutations in GDF9 have been associated with increased ovulation rates and high litter sizes in heterozygous carriers. Therefore, fecundity gene for GDF9 (FecGH...

This study was conducted to estimate the genetic parameters of litter size (LS) in Moghani sheep using threshold model via Bayesian approach. The data originated from the Jafar-Abad Station of Ardabil province, Iran, and included 9698 lactation records of 4977 ewes with lambings from 1995 until 2010. The pedigree file consisted of data on animals born from 1987 to 2010. The significance of fixe...
متن کاملGenetic implications of a simulation model of litter size in swine based on ovulation rate, potential embryonic viability and uterine capacity: II. Simulated selection.
Direct selection for ovulation rate, uterine capacity, litter size and embryo survival and selection for indexes of ovulation rate with each of the remaining traits were simulated for a swine population. The relationships among these traits were determined from a simulation model that assumed that litter size was always less than or equal to both ovulation rate and uterine capacity. Heritabilit...

G-protein-coupled receptor (GPR54) is one of the known gene affecting fecundity. This gene affects the ovulation rate and litter size performance. A total of 160 animals including Sanjabi (n=100) and Ghezel (n=60) were used to identify polymorphisms of GPR54 gene and their influence on litter size. Genomic DNA was extracted by commercial DNA kit. The genotypic patterns were detected using th...

Improvement of litter size (lambs bprn/ewes lambing) in sheep is difficult for several reasons. The experimental results on direct selection for litter size, coupled with generally low estimates of genetic parameters of litter size led to widespread interest in the use of indirect selection criteria for genetic improvement of litter size. It has been argued that ovulation rate is the main limit...
